I think the author was on to something with that sentence about Seattle lacking a finishing touch on Thursday. If you look back on the 2009 schedule, Seattle lost all three of their previous Thursday games by identical scores of 1-0. Including the playoff contest, the Sounders are now scoreless in four straight Thursday matches. As for Mondays...

After an entire year of people either praising or berating the sounders and their fans, it seems to me that sounders fans constantly have to defend themselves for showing up to games and getting especially impassioned about their team. As a transplant from Chicago to Seattle, one thing people don't seem to get about Seattle and the northwest in general is that they kind of have the second city mentality, everyone here seems to think that everyone across the rest of this country is out to get them and their teams...clearly with unsuccessful teams like the mariners and the recently departed sonics, and the abysmal showing of the seahawks the past two years, people here are desperate for excitement and something to cheer about. Enter the sounders. A team fans could instantly connect with and support. Soccer out here has always been somewhat readily supported. The fans took well to the sounders and it seems like the rest of the country either reviles their success or is loudly applauding it. @Joey, comments like yours are not at all helpful, give it up already, people out here are just excited and passionate about their team, let them/us have our fun and enjoy the season that has been essentially what every other mls team could only dream of. Even if the sounders don't win it all (which I hope they do), it has been the most successful season in mls franchise history, and the rest of the mls needs to get over the fact that while they have just as passionate fans as anywhere else, they don't have near the numbers of sounders support. I couldn't agree more with steven, this is great for the mls, we need more fans, and more passionate fans who will bring others into the fray of the sport. I hope soccer blows up here in the states within the next 5 to 10 years...its exciting and a great time to be a fan, no matter where you are.

For Joey Clams only ( everyone else please ignore):
The Seattle fans are the best in the league there is NO doubt. The Sounders will most likely draw 40,000+ fans per game next year.
Yoiu should be more grateful, it is a league that it owned collectively, and inspite of being there since the start, New England and its fans don't really contribute anything meaningful to the league.
The amount of revenue the Sounders will contibue next year will probably be 4-5 years worth for your pathetic fans/franchise.
Rather than blast Seattle and its fans, you should worship them. You shouldn't make them angry, you should make sure they are happy.

Salazar totally screwed the pooch. Regardless of Montero's immaturity at times this season, Onstad fully deserved his card, and justifiably could have been shown red, while Fredy's yellow for being plowed over by the lunatic jackass Gynamo goalkeeper was so undeserved it belies belief. I'm not talking about Salazar's FULL 90 minutes of terror on everything sane and just, just that single episode. MLS is a freaking joke in regards to their officiating. That single episode was criminal incompetence on the part of that addled, but typically corrupt/moronic MLS ref.

Although somewhat silly, I guess the impassioned comments on this blog are a good sign for the MLS. They show a clear link between civic identity, and the Sounders in Seattle, much like other fans in other cities fiercely identify with an NFL or MLB team. The MLS needs people to care about the product, when a lot of soccer fans in the US don't care about their local team or watch the MLS.

I'm sort of obsessed with the writing on this site. Like, am I the only one who sees that there's something glaringly wrong with a sentence like, "As was the case so many times this season, the Seattle Sounders main impediment was the fact that they were unable to convert upon the chances that the team earned on Thursday evening"?

So all season they were hurt because they couldn't convert the chances they had on Thursday? What about games on Monday? Were they hurt by not converting the chances they had on Thursday then too?

You can say I'm a nitpicker or a Grammar Nazi or whatever, but I don't see these problems on, like, I don't know, Deadspin, Grant Wahl's blog or Soccer Insider or wherever. Don't get me wrong--I want to like this site, but sometimes I'm just not that stoked on the writing. A copy editor could take this post and make it sing in a few minutes though. When is that gonna happen?

Okay, now vote me down.

You must be joking. You come from the land of the Red Sox and their belief that everyone in America should love them and you're criticizing our fans!?!?!?!?!? I have a ton of friens form New England, who are transplants to Seattle and love the Sounders and their fans. But I've seen them support their New England teams. You are so freakin' full of it. God, you're worse than a neo-con. You're a pompous *ss. So what if people spike their hair. I met Minnesota fans in Seattle who went to games dressed in purple pimp suits. They were great! At least we don't wear cheese on our heads like Green Bay. You must be the most BORING person to go to a sporting event with. You who dresses up the most for the Sounders? DO you know who makes up a HUGE percentage of the crowd? LITTLE KIDS. With dyed hair and painted faces and their Sounders gear. Stay in New England and play on your hash marks with your anemic fan base. You do, most definitely, SUCK IT!
