Sorry to be that guy, but the NY/NJ were dropped together from the Metrostars name starting in 1998 (I know ticketmaster continues to refer to them as such), so you can’t really blame Red Bull for eliminating the New Jersey part of the name. You can, however, blame them for not bringing it back when they brought back New York.

“The MetroStars were known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars through 1997, after which the NY/NJ part of the name was gradually phased out and then dropped altogether.”

“Starting in 1998, the team stopped referring to itself NY/NJ, but it took a few years for the media and fans to catch up. The team went by just MetroStars, with no city or state attached to it, a rarity in American sports.”

Enjoyed your column with some great information about the early days of soccer in New Jersey. I need to correct one assertion – the ball from the 1869 Rutgers vs. Princeton match is not at the Hall of Fame in Oneonta. At one time we displayed the ball from the first documented soccer/football game played by Oneida FC on Boston Common, but the ball is owned by Historic New England and they currently have it.

I encourage you to dig more into the soccer history of the area and add more tidbits about the wonderful early days of soccer in New Jersey. There are many interesting stories to tell.

This is one of the few things that makes me want to keep my South Jersey ties to the north half. Being from SJ, right outside Philly, all these cities sound so foreign compared to the Philly ‘burbs. But hey it’s Jersey and I’ll take it! Cool info.
