Welcome to the American Soccer Show MLS Power Rankings for 2008. This is the week one rankings.
1- DC United
The two time defending supporters shield winners look for international glory this year in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
2- Houston
The two time defending MLS Cup Champions remain fairly intact and primed for another title run.
3- New England
Losing Pat Noonan hurts, but Steve Nicol and Paul Mariner understand how to locate cheap American talent
4- Chivas USA
Re-signing Panchito Mendoza was critical.
5- Kansas City
Claudio Lopez is about three times the player Eddie Johnson was.
6- Chicago
Dennis Hamlet has a good squad to choose from, but besides Blanco no standout players.
7- FC Dallas
Duilio Davino is a nice signing, but losing Carlos Ruiz leaves a big hole up front
8- LA Galaxy
The defense is a big concern, but scoring goals shouldn’t be a problem.
9- Real Salt Lake
I’m high on this team with its Argentine contingent leading the way.
10- Columbus
Boy would Zurawski have helped this side. Sigi Schmid better figure something out quickly.
11- NY Red Bulls
Osorio may be a crack manager but this teams squad stinks especially with Dane Richards out for several months. Angel cannot do it alone.
12- Colorado
Maybe Christian Gomez can turn this struggling franchise around
13- San Jose
Believe it or not, acquiring Ronnie O’Brien and Nick Garcia could really help Frank Yallop’s team compete at a higher level than expected.
14- Toronto
For those who compare MLS to the lower divisions of English Football this team is proof positive of where MLS really rates when compared to England’s lower leagues.
It’s interesting that you rate Kansas City so High, and NY so low. I happen to agree, but had been doubting my assessment because I kept reading opinions to the contrary. Anyway, I’m so excited about this upcoming season that every time I see an MLS commercial I pee a little bit… just a little bit.
Plus SuperLiga and CCC, Olympics, and WC qualifying. This is going to be a great year for soccer fans in the US of A!
