This is completely off topic, but I’ve just joined an intramural soccer league and need to buy cleats and shin guards. I haven’t played since middle school so am over a decade behind in my knowledge of quality. Can anyone recommend good shoes for under a hundred dollars? The cleats can’t be metal. Also, is there any variety in shin guards, or should I just buy whatever? Thanks for your help!

Hi Joe, can you let me know where in the country you are? Try craigslist maybe? Adidas/Nike are your premier suppliers just make sure you ask for plastic ‘moulds’ or blades when asking sports stores for boots.

As for shin guards there are only two variety’s really, with ankle protectors joined on or not. Your call if you get them I have played with both.

I’m in NYC. I just took a walk down to Modell’s and I kind of liked the Nike Mercural Victory FG’s, and only $60. But I guess I’ll read up more and maybe try a more soccer-specific store before purchasing. Thanks for your help!

          Glad I could mate!

If you want to really geek out check nike’s website they do a ‘what kind of player i am’ and they recommend a boot accordingly.

Well as I said, I haven’t played since middle school, so I think the kind of player I am would have to be “rusty”.

Ha – one word of warning with Nike (and all footy boots manufacturers in general) – don’t buy into the hype about being a certain “type” of player (“speed” or “finesse” or “power” or whatever). For 99.9% of players, shaving an extra couple of grams of the weight of a shoe will make no difference to your game. Just look for the comfiest.

I’m in NYC too – If you follow my advice and get Copa’s, I think you can get them from City Sports (a chain of sports stores in Manhattan) for about $90, but no more than $100 in other places. It’s worth the extra $40. Modells tends to sell the lower end boots that feel clunky and wear out quicker.

if you’re going to suggest craigslist, you need to be able to search all of craigslist – like http://allofcraigs.com

comes in handy once in awhile

For shoes, Adidas “Copa Mundials” all the way (or Adidas “World Cups” if you’re playing on really soft ground). They’ve been around forever (completely unchanged since 1982), and for good reason. I bought myself a pair last year, and they’re like slippers. So soft and comfortable, and great quality – they last forever.

They’re classic in style too – none of this brightly colored nonsense all the kids are into these days. Should be just under $100.

    I don’t see it…them being the worst.

But I don’t see them making the playoffs either, so I guess they are in the discussion, huh ?

I don’t mean to rip on a fan base that has been incredible, but it seems like all their whining is not helping that team. They do get what they want sometimes, so they would probably disagree with me.

“but dragged their feat in hiring a head coach and general manager” Really? Sure, it may have been quite a feat landing Aaron Winter but…

I saw them in Charleston. They are terrible.

    couple things:

-Gordon was acquired as depth, highly doubt he will be starting unless its necessary, most likely going to see Santos or another striker we pick up before or during the season that has a better record

-Teams that played in Charleston have not be starters but a majority of trialists, hardly a gauge of how we will compete this year based on that alone, let alone the fact our team isnt done yet

    - definitely not the worst team in the league, dont think we will be mind blowing either, not sure if we will make the playoffs as i havent even seen what our starting 11 can do yet, in fact prob noone has but Winter and co.

-Cann has renegotiated and is back on the team

-Dunno bout Sturgis starting in mid as we will have DeGuzman, Bouchiba, as well as Zavarise who can all play that position and have done so regularly at slightly higher levels
