Daniel, this is one of my biggest problems with MLS. For years when American national team players are sitting on the bench or worse outside of the match squad in Europe NO ATTEMPT IS EVER MADE TO BRING BACK THESE GUYS ON LOAN TO KEEP THEM SHARP FOR THE NATIONAL TEAM. The Brazilian and Argentine leagues take care of their own players- if an argentine doesn't play in Europe they are brought back on loan or bought outright in the next window.

Again, MLS as time has gone on has less and less interest in the US Nats unless it consists of bringing in 35 year old washed up vets who'll never be capped again.

Dude: To be honest as a Red Bull NY supporter, I have always known Jozy was going to be a starter for the National Team. My only problem I had & I'm not blaming Altidore or Bradley at all, it was the lack of playing time he wasn't getting at Xerez & the way Villarreal has handled him. That's the only reason I was surprised he was put in the starting eleven against T&T. I was also surprised he played the full 90 Minutes as well. Because he isn't getting first team minutes I thought he would be a super sub off the bench.

It's nothing to be ashamed about, but once again the coach at Xerez refuses to use Altidore once he went there on loan from Villarreal. Also Villarreal has miss-used Jozy at the same time. Does he need more seasoning? Yes. But still he has enough abillity to do some damage for the Nats. But like I said, he is not getting any first team minutes and that's why I was surprised he got the start.

This can't be the norm for Jozy. He needs first team minutes to be at his best for the Nats. Villarreal has to re-call him now, or send him back to MLS on loan to RBNY to get those minutes.

Agree 100% on Altidore, he has a bright future if he doesn't get lost in the black hole that Spanish football can be. I was very anxious when a number of PL teams showed interest in him (I'd think he'd do great things at a mid to low level PL team like Fulham). But Villa seems to want to keep him.

As an aside, did anyone else find it mind-boggling that T&T kept Jason Scotland on the bench until the last 15 minutes? I've seen him play a few times at Swansea City in the Championship and he is a star in the making. I can't recall a game I saw where he didn't find the back of the net at least once. Is the front line of Soca that good that he can't get in?

As an aside to an aside, if you want to watch a well coached team play great football, watch Swansea.

I bet, had Adu gone to Inter, we would never have seen him again. He would have been dropped, because his play simply doesn't suit Serie A. Ultimately, right now he may be infamous and in some ways a disappointment. But he did good things for MLS, raised awareness, even if delusioned fans heaped it on thick. He was the first real prodigy that the US has produced, and we didn't raise him well. Just watch, though, he'll be fine, and I ultimately believe he will be stronger for the struggle.

And author, you really shouldn't have been surprised at Altidore's conclusion. Bradley just couldn't ignore him anymore.

European Coaches ruin American players?

No. Certain British coaches do, but it is American coaches who ruin American players more often than not.

Freddy Adu's biggest mistake was not signing with Inter when he had the chance. Those three plus years in MLS he'll never get back.

Tactics in MLS with the exception of those used by Osorio tend to be simple and MLS training techniques are by accounts I have gotten off the record from a few players I know you guys have heard of, a joke compared to Europe. Claudio Reyna even stated this publicly and as I said some other people have said it privately.

Altidore has the potential to be the best striker we've ever produced. But he's still a long way from developing into a world class striker.

Also Daniel Villarreal has Guille Franco, Gisueppi Rossi and Nihat (who I think is the most under rated striker in international football). How exactly is Altidore, whose training habits have been questioned probably because of his time in MLS and the huge commitment it takes to adopt to European training habits going to play ahead of any of those three distinguished player?

Fair dues to Jozy but the defending was terrible. Donovan was just OK, imho.

I liked the pairing of Ching and Jozy up front with Donovan in the middle. Ching works well with a big target striker (something we know well in Houston), putting Landon in the middle gives him a better view to read what's happening on the pitch, we saw that last night.

kyle:

That's what it looks like to me. Ching seems to make the offense work for Altidore and Donovan. Granted Jozy was blessed by the excellent work of the above mentioned, but he made excellent individual moves that show his talent as a player much like C. Renaldo can do. Leaves a USA fan with a warm feeling all over.

We can talk later about how European coaches ruin American talent. Hint, Kartik, time for a Olbermann style special comment on this subject!

Altidoe is the most naturally gifted striker we have ever produced. There is no doubt he should be starting in South Africa. The question is can you go to a world cup with Brian Ching as your other staring striker?
