The north of England rarely identifies with the England team, or the south, of which the England team is supposedly favouring. HQ is in Soho Squrea in London etc. A lot of fans in the north have been known to sing "we hate England" in a mix of passion and irony for what national coaches do to their players. For example, England two weeks ago fielded Villa players who got injured. Villa are pushing for a ground-breaking place in the top four, while the game that damaged Heskey and tired a few more was a friendly against Spain. It's understandable.

Rafa:

Ok, I'm a Chicago homer! I admit that if you put Chicago on the shirt I'm for them. McBride is a home town guy and so is special to me but lets take keepers out of the picture and the case is really strong for McBride. Reyna was limited by his injuries the last few years and was clearly not as productive as McBride in his last years. I loved Claudio do not get me wrong. Tony Sanneh in his day was strong no doubt about it. Which player turned things around for his team like McBride did when he lead Fulham's charge to stay up last year.

Glad to hear your a Chivas fan and I like them very much. Above comments are directed to the Galaxy which are too Hollywood for me. You are right Saturday nights are special for the Fire. Coming to Chicago at all this summer? I suggest a fan trip from this site for the Fire game on June 5 and the US Men on June 6 in the qualifier. A great weekend in the Windy City!

Rafa: Reyna was hands down the best.

O'Brien played well until his injuries. He would have been the best had he not been injured.

JMM got hurt alot. I think he scored a goal in something like 1 out of every 3 matches he played for Everton which is an amazing goal scoring rate for an American but he was always injured so the truth is over three and a half years he probably played the equivalent of one Premiership season.

Harkes I think was serviceable and useful and that's why he was always in demand in England. Still I wouldn't compare him to the other names.

Wynalda was good in Germany before coming to MLS in the first season, and Tony Sanneh some may forget had his impact in the Bundesliga for a few years.

An interesting topic and surely a future blog post!

EPLNFL

Brian McBride was far from the best American player in Europe. Brad Freidel, Kasey Keller and Tim Howard put him to shame. If you are looking just at field players I have a longer list: Claudio Reyna, John O'Brien before his injuries, DaMarcus Beasley, John Harkes who started an FA Cup final, and Joe Max Moore who scored goals both in Germany and England, and in MLS also.

LA is the discussion because LA matters. I'm a Chivas fan but the Galaxy led the league in attendance BEFORE Beckham.

Chicago struggled with crowd building and moved 3 times before signing Blanco and making Toyota Park a hip place to be on a Saturday night.

I know you are just supporting your team, but some respect please.

Curtis Spliteri

NOTHING gets censored on this site unless it used foul language. (Heck I have even allowed some racist language to remain through the years) You posted on the wrong thread, a thread about a week old.. The comment is still there.

BTW, I do not believe calling a sport by its proper name is eurosnoberry, I learned to use the term football or futbol from Latinos which are aplenty in south Florida, in the NASL days, almost 30 years back. The sport has never been called soccer for them, and never been called soccer in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area.

Don't think it's a concession to the English, because as you probably can tell I am not much for conceding anything to them.

A good post. Christ, if Bruce can just shore up the backline a bit AND he gets Donovan back, LA is going to be consistently dangerous. They were almost always entertaining last year, just because you knew every three games or so would be a goal bonanza.

BTW: Surreptitiously, Kartik. I love the podcast and the blog but there are times when the posts could use some proofreading/spellchecking. Thanks!

Travis, the North American teams could give a damn what Europe says about them, because quite frankly Europe only pays attention to them when they do something infuriating to Europe.

Good on the MLS for standing their ground. It was the best move for Canadian and American soccer/futbol.

I see you removed my comment from earlier today where I pointed out that your constant use of "football", "footballers" and "footballing" makes you look like a closet Eurosnob. That's okay, deleting posts that criticize you won't change that.

Besides your selective censorship, I actually liked the piece; however, the censorship thing doesn't make you look good . . . sorta like a Eurosnob (LOL! Sorry I couldn't help myself!).

Love,
CS
