Sticky, I agree. I understand this is a casual football blog intended just for fun and relaxation, but sometimes it's pretty disturbing to see the grammar skills displayed by these bloggers. I've seen 6th graders write better than they do sometimes.

For starters, I think they should learn the difference between a berth and a birth.

"As the tournament grew in name and stature qualifying started to get less and less"

Daniel, I stopped seriously reading after this. You guys (Kartik often has glaring errors in his writing as well) have GOT to get someone to proofread your writing. It is seriously impacting your ability to get your ideas out there.

Please guys, get someone else to look over your work before you post - someone who's going to read for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. This is the same thing I tell undergraduates, and frankly most of their writing is free of errors and inanities like the one above. I want to read your ideas, not struggle to understand what I think you mean.

Would "lower division" teams get the right to play at home since they often cannot afford to pay to travel (just like the DFB Cup)? It's not like you need a huge stadium to host a game, given current attendance figures. Also, until you get support/buy-in from the MLS for this tournament, it's not going to be important.

Couple things are needed:

1) Money - there has to be a bit more incentive. The USOC needs a major investor. This would go towards both marketing and
2) Pre-planning and organization - these matches are not well attended for a variety of reasons, but one is the fact that the draw is well into the US soccer season and the more casual fans will not find out about the matches. Dates and possible matchups need to be made available to clubs to put placeholders in their league schedules before they are printed. My Tottenham season ticket booklet for this season had ticket vouchers for the FA cup final (unused of course) but the point is that clubs in established leagues know when they might be playing well ahead of the season.

Step 1 to improving this tournament has to be to improve the prize money. The fact that the total prize purse is $190,000 would be funny if it weren't so pathetic.

Torquay United alone received more prize money than that in their FA Cup run this season and they were knocked out in the 4th round.

Start by getting some type of sponsorship or broacasting rights to bump the prize purse up to at least $500,000. Then hand out $5,000 for each 1st round win, $7,500 for a 2nd round win, $10,000 for 3rd round, $20,000 for 4th round, $50,000 to the runner up, and $100,000 to the winner.

So a USL club getting to the 3rd round would get $22,500 (a good chunk of change for clubs at this level) and a MLS club entering at the 3rd round would get $180,000 for winning the whole thing.

But ideally, this should be a $1,000,000 tournament and all the cash amounts above should be doubled.

There's so much wrong with how this is written and the thought process behind it that I hardly know where to begin.

True or false: Every MLS team had a chance to win the US Open Cup this year?

And, Berlin, SUM doesn't have anything to do with this tournament. You get that, right? No, you don't.

Nice article. I completely agree, they need to get all USL1&2 plus all MLS clubs in the mix.

Keep emailing the idea directly to US Open Cup!!

A very thoguhtful proposal Daniel. But US Soccer is not going to make the sort of changes they need to make to make this tournament viable. I like your suggestion better than Kartik's, although his is also good if we keep the current format. But neither of your suggestions will get anywhere with Gulati, Garber, Marcos and the suits that run this country's soccer institutions.
