Bradley Recalls Clark, Adds Wynne and Orozco for Upcoming Qualifiers

by Kartik Krishnaiyer on August 28, 2008 · 6 comments

US Manager Bob Bradley has recalled Rico Clark and omitted Kenny Cooper, Freddy Adu and Jozy Altidore in his 20 man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers versus Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago. Marvell Wynne and Michael Orozco have also been called into the team. Both Wynne and Orozco are in my mind deserving of a call up to the senior team and this is nice move by Bradley.

However, otherwise this is an unbelievable squad selection quite honestly.  Eddie Johnson now toiling in the second flight of English Football and with two goals at any level in the last twelve months is one of only two true strikers on the squad, the other being Brian Ching who plays in a more withdrawn role. Kenny Cooper, whose exploits in MLS and quality that has attaracted interest of sides like Rosenborg in the Champions League has been omitted once again. Cooper was last called into the national team in March 2007.

Mo Edu who recently transferred to Rangers in Glasgow has been selected as has Johnson who moved to second division Cardiff City last week from Fulham where he flopped. This refuts any claim that players that have recently transferred such as Adu and Altidore should not be called into the side. Much more on this squad selection early tomorrow.

GOALKEEPERS (2): Brad Guzan (Aston Villa: 2/2 SO), Tim Howard (Everton FC: 4/3 SO)
DEFENDERS (8): Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes: 14/2), Danny Califf (FC Midtjylland: 2/0), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96: 16/0), Frankie Hejduk (Columbus Crew: 12/1), Oguchi Onyewu (Standard de Liege: 9/0), Michael Orozco (San Luis: 0/0), Heath Pearce (Hansa Rostock: 3/0), Marvell Wynne (Toronto FC: 0/0)
MIDFIELDERS (6): DaMarcus Beasley (Glasgow Rangers: 17/4), Michael Bradley (SC Heerenveen: 3/1), Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo: 1/0), Maurice Edu (Glasgow Rangers: 2/0), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA: 1/0), Eddie Lewis (Los Angeles Galaxy: 20/3)
FORWARDS (4): Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo: 8/4), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy: 22/8), Clint Dempsey (Fulham FC: 9/2), Eddie Johnson (Cardiff City: 8/8)

Wynne, YES! It’s about time, I heard your comments about Bradley not liking Wynne on the podcast but at least he’s being given a chance to be proved wrong. With Wynne in the defensive picture you have to like the US defensive line. It’s big, strong, and quick.

Now if we can put the offense together before 2010, watch out.

I can still pray that Neven will accept a call up one day.

Subotic and Gooch would be one of the best centerback tandems in the world in my opinion.

I just listened to the show again…

Could we talk about the players who were called up instead of whining about who wasn’t called up?

I know that Dave thinks Adu is as good as Messi (plus, that we should destroy Guatemala on the road, but Joe Public is a really good team in CONCACAF lol).

Yet again no Feilhaber. YESSSS!

Actally I like this lineup better than the one that traveled to Guatemala.

As long as Johnson and Beasley don’t start I won’t complain too much.

Not that I hate Beasley’s game, but he has the mentality of a D-mid, and the size of a 13 year old. Ever since he left MLS, his play just seems slightly off. Like he’s playing out of position. Granted I don’t catch much of his club play. I hear Ranger are happy with him.

Johnsons game I hate.

Why is Johnson STILL in the Team? He couldn’t cut it at Fulham but we’re supposed to believe he’s good enough for international duty? Crazy. No Adu? F me.
